Marine Eco-Learning Program (2012 – 2013)

Aim: To increase youth knowledge on coastal resource resilience and sustainable environmental management through education.

Activity: (April 2013 to April 2014) A curriculum and module was developed during the project to be pilot tested in four senior high schools. This also includes syllabus. The learning methods included in class meeting and discussion, field visits and practice, and students’ presentation.

Target Group: This project involved 200 students from four senior high schools in Sumbawa District.

Stakeholders involved: Students of SMAN 1 Sumbawa, SMAN 2 Sumbawa, SMKN 1 Sumbawa, SMKN 2 Sumbawa, The Marine and Fisheries Agency of Sumbawa District, and The National Education Agency of Sumbawa District.

Ouput:

Outcome:

Increased knowledge about marine and coastal resources conservation issues and how it links with climate change issues.

Increased understanding about the opportunities and barriers of doing such education programme in schools.

Follow up: During a multi-stakeholders meeting conducted post the project, schools have shown their enthusiasm to implement and use the module in their schools. Nevertheless, they raised some concerns. One of their concerns is that schools are lacking of human resources capable of doing marine and coastal resources conservation education. It is then very important to establish an environmental education center with a focus on marine and coastal conservation issues which is run by capable team.
